Vocalizes excitement and pleasure with cooing and babbling

7 Months–1 Year
Babbling includes repeated syllables
Uses speech sounds to gain attention
Begins to imitate different speech sounds
First words emerge (bye-bye, mama, dada)

Recognizes words—common items
